Australia-Japan Society of NSW

Welcome to the Australia-Japan Society of NSW

The Australia-Japan Society of NSW Incorporated (AJS-NSW) aims to bring together Australian and Japanese people living in NSW to explore mutual interests.

AJS-NSW holds regular business, social and cultural functions, details of which are listed here and on our Linkedin and Facebook pages.

Our business events have guest speakers who are leaders in commerce, industry, politics and government, and focus on issues relevant to the Australia-Japan business relationship.

Our cultural events aim to explore aspects of Japanese culture and history, often within the perspective of Australia's vibrant and diverse cultural scene.

Popular social functions include 'Shaberanaito' language nights in Japanese and English, and our annual Sumo party.

AJS-NSW also supports the study of Japanese language and culture in NSW through awards and other activities.

'Tailored With Love: Children's Kimono Throughout Generations'

The Japan Foundation Gallery until June 8, 2024

This exhibition showcases traditional Japanese children’s clothing and artefacts, dating from the Edo period to the early Showa period. Curated by Iwao Nagasaki of Kyoritsu Women’s University Museum, the kimono on display reflect the diversity of textiles in each era and the parental care in the choice or sewing of the garment. More detail here.

Call to join the Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network

The Japan Foundation and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) jointly sponsor this network of early-career professionals focused on resilience in the Indo-Pacific Region. Applications are now open for the 2024-25 cohort which again will focus on "disaster resilience". Participants develop their research during a series of tours and meetings across Japan, Australia, and the South Pacific. Applications are required by 30 May. See link for details.
