Is the Australia-Japan relationship being forgotten in the midst of Australia’s current economic prosperity? Has the mining boom and the unprecedented terms of trade, along with a focus on China and India, relegated Japan to an afterthought, despite its ongoing position as a major trading partner.

What is the future for the Australia-Japan relationship, given the perceived effects of the dominance of the emerging economies on the regional and global economic and political landscape?

Professor the Hon. Stephen Martin is well-qualified to address these questions. Prof. Martin is currently CEO of CEDA - The Committee for Economic Development of Australia. Prior to this appointment, he had a long and distinguished career in the Australian Parliament, academia and the private sector. CEDA is an independent organisation dedicated to providing thought leadership on the economic and social issues affecting Australia into the future.

The Hon. Stephen Martin was a Federal MP representing the New South Wales  electorates of Macarthur and Cunningham 1984-2002. In Government, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Chairman of the Inquiry into the Australian Banking Industry. After retiring from Parliament, Professor Martin has held a number of senior executive roles in academia, including at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Victoria University, Melbourne and Curtin University of Technology in Perth.
