    H&H Lawyers

    JET Programme Position: CIR

    JET Location: Toyama Prefecture

I lived in Japan during my early years before moving to Australia, and have kept a strong interest in Japan ever since. As a graduate, I worked at KPMG which offered its employees 1 year leave of absence. I took this opportunity to apply to the JET Programme and worked as a Coordinator for International Relations at Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture – absolute ‘inaka’ (countryside) which I grew to love. After coming back to Sydney, I moved over to Deloitte where I continued to be closely involved in providing services to Japanese corporate clients. I then moved to H & H Lawyers, a law firm with particular focus on assisting businesses from the APAC region, where I work closely with many Japanese organisations including government, multinational corporates and local SMEs.

    Program Coordinator

    Japan Foundation

    JET Programme Position: CIR

    JET Location: Kochi Prefecture

I had an interest in Japan from a young age which sparked my motivation to learn Japanese and use it in my career. I studied Japanese throughout school and university before embarking on a 2 year stint on the JET Program as a Coordinator for International Relations in Konan City, Kochi Prefecture. My time on JET really built up my language skills and confirmed my love for Japan. On returning from JET I worked in accountancy and tax before being drawn back to Japan-focused roles at The Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) Sydney office and the Japan desk of Air France/KLM. I am a former committee member and president of JETAA NSW. I am currenting working as a Program Coordinator at The Japan Foundation, Sydney in the Language Department promoting and supporting the study of Japanese language in Australia.

A Conversation with Alison Watts, translator of

What You Are Looking For Is In The Library

Alison's translation of Michiko Aoyama's What You are Looking for is in the Library (お探し物は図書室まで) (Doubleday UK/ HarperCollins USA) has just been released to wide acclaim, scoring a coveted review in The New York Times.

Alison is a long-term resident of Japan with a successful record in translating contemporary Japanese literature. Her past translations include Sweet Bean Paste (あん) a long-selling bestseller by Durian Sukegawa  (助川ドリアン), and Spark (火花), the publishing phenomenon by Naoki Matayoshi.

In this interview we will be asking Alison about her latest book translation, and leave plenty of time for audience questions as well.

    BIO

Alison Watts was born in Millicent, South Australia and has degrees from the University of Adelaide and Sheffield University. She has been a full-time freelance literary translator since 2016. Her novel translations include Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa, Spark by Naoki Matayoshi, novels by Riku Onda, and The Boy and the Dog by Shusei Hase.

Alison was awarded the Cornell University Kyoko Selden Memorial Prize for Translation in 2021 for an excerpt from Durian Sukegawa’s travel memoir A Dosimeter on The Narrow Road to Oku. She also translates sashiko books for Tuttle Publishing. Read more about her literary translation activities here.

We look forward to welcoming Alison for what promises to be a fascinating conversation.
