    Royal Botanic Garden Walk

    Free event for AJS Members

Celebrate springtime with a relaxed morning stroll around Australia’s oldest botanic garden and scientific institution, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, a heritage-listed 30-hectare oasis founded in 1816.

Our walk will start at The Calyx to visit the current exhibition, Alchemy of a Rainforest, described as “an immersive journey that envelops you in the vibrant, living essence of one of the Earth's most valuable ecosystems”.

We will then take in some of the Garden’s highlights, including November’s Must See seasonal list of plants looking at their best (monthly list curated by volunteers). Also:
The Japanese section of the Oriental Garden
Mrs Macquarie’s Chair for a group shot with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as our backdrop

We’ll finish back at The Calyx, where we can enjoy lunch or coffee together (at your own cost) at the Leaf Dept Cafe.

We look forward to sharing a delightful morning of conversation, culture, and connection.

    Guest speaker talk:

Dr. Ray Nickson on the forgotten history of the Nippon Baseball Club

The Nippon Baseball Club played in the premier Sydney baseball competition during the first decades of the White Australia policy. The Club was widely supported and gave to NSW baseball its most treasured trophy. However its contribution was largely erased during WWII. This talk seeks to redress that forgotten history.

Dr. Nickson is the Director of the University of Newcastle Justice Clinic, and a Senior Lecturer in criminology. He is speaking to us as a sports historian, a role in which he fuses his love of sports with research as the leading expert on baseball’s history in Australia. A current project examines the role of migrants from Asia in advancing baseball during the early years of the White Australia policy.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM.

    Anita Byrnes, President
